One of the best katsu I've ever had. The breading was incredibly crispy and light, while the meat inside stayed tender, juicy, and full of flavor. Every bite was perfectly balanced, and you can really tell they use quality ingredients. Service was quick, and despite the restaurant's popularity, the overall experience was well worth it. If you're in Irvine and craving authentic Japanese-style katsu, Hako is definitely a place you shouldn't miss. I'll definitely be coming back!

Didn’t know they had sushi rolls and noodles on the menu, but people come to Hako mainly for their katsu so go here with the expectation of a long wait. Family and I came here for dinner and waited an hour before getting seated. All that standing around should be more than enough to figure out what to order by the time you’re inside. I wish this place was a little bit bigger though! The food itself came out fairly quickly despite the busy Friday evening. Loved how perfectly crispy the pork cutlet was. No tough bits or chewy overcooked corners or soggy centers. I do wish there was a bit more rice though. I also love that the curry is separated in a bowl so it’s not soaking everything else. I’d come back here again! Maybe with a shorter wait next time.

This was my second attempt trying to eat here after walking away from a massive line the first time. Returned for my birthday dinner, and once again, encountered a huge wait line. You have to sign yourself up on the iPad waitlist located outside. We ended up waiting about 20 minutes to be seated. The food, however, absolutely delivered: Takoyaki (with octopus): Incredible start to the meal. Amazing texture and flavor. Chicken Gyoza: Served as a solid, tasty side. Chicken Katsu with Curry: A massive and satisfying entree. It comes as a full set with rice, miso soup, fermented radish, onions, katsu, and a flavorful curry sauce. Despite how incredibly busy they were, the staff was friendly and the service was surprisingly quick once we got a table. Bonus points for ample free parking in the lot, which can be rare around here. Pro Tip: Be prepared for a crowd, sign in on the iPad immediately when you arrive, and don't skip the takoyaki!

It's quite decent but the pork cutlet could be juicier. The beef wasn't too crispy but when we air fried it at home it was better. Wish the sauce was heavier on the tonkatsu flavor. Tempura was pretty good.

Hako is can't-miss for excellent Japanese food at a reasonable price...if you can time the wait list correctly. I went with a group, and every dish we tried was excellent (we had lots of leftovers!), and ultimately worth the wait. That said, we had to wait for over an hour (beyond the advertised wait time). Luckily, we weren't starving, and bided our time next door at Zion Market while we waited for our text message. They will give away your table if you don't check in within 5 minutes of your text, so keep tabs and don't wander too far. Next time, I will make sure to bring a book!
